Can Correcting Posture Help with Jaw Pain?

A recent pilot study explored whether improving forward head posture—when the head shifts too far in front of the shoulders—could help people with temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). TMD is a common condition that can cause jaw pain, difficulty opening the mouth, and even headaches.

What the Study Found

Researchers compared two groups:

  • Group 1: Standard jaw exercises and care
  • Group 2: The same care plus a posture correction device designed to gently restore the natural curve of the neck

Both groups improved…
But the posture-focused group saw greater changes in their head and neck alignment and had better jaw function scores by the end of the study.

Why This Matters

These early findings suggest that posture correction may not only ease neck and shoulder tension—but may also reduce jaw pain and improve overall comfort.

While the study was small and more research is needed, it offers exciting insight:
Better posture may play a meaningful role in caring for TMD and similar conditions.
