About Chiropractic

New Patients“Chiropractic is a philosophy, science and art of things natural; a system of adjusting segments of the spinal column by hand only, for the correction of the cause of disease.”
Dr. B.J. Palmer, Developer of Chiropractic

Chiropractic is the largest natural health care profession in the world. Chiropractic has become the number one choice for health and healing without drugs or surgery.

Chiropractic, as a healing art, is based on 5 major principles:

  1. Healing occurs from above, down, inside, out.
  2. Your body is a self-healing organism. You are designed to heal yourself! That’s the way God created us.
  3. Your nervous system, which is made up of your brain, brainstem, spinal cord and nerves, is the master control unit of your body. As long as your brain and spinal cord are able to transmit vital life messages to every organ, tissue and cell of your body, you should be your healthiest. This is called normal.
  4. If something interferes with the life messages flowing from your brain and down your spinal cord, your body will malfunction. Sickness and suffering may not be the first thing to occur, but, if left uncorrected, are inevitable.
  5. Chiropractors correct this interference. Specific, scientific, chiropractic adjustments are given to correct this interference so your body can heal itself.

It’s as simple as that……….

A chiropractor’s role is to detect and correct vertebral subluxations. A subluxation is the condition of a vertebra that has lost its proper juxtaposition with the one above or below, or both; which impinges nerves and interferes with the transmission of mental impulses. Only chiropractors are trained to detect and correct these interferences in a person’s spine.

Other doctors treat symptoms. The doctor of chiropractic corrects the cause, allowing the body to heal itself so you can feel great!

The Adjustment

New Patients “A chiropractic therapeutic procedure that uses controlled force, leverage, direction, amplitude, and velocity directed to specific joints or anatomic regions. Chiropractors use such procedures to influence joint and neurophysiologic function.”
Meridel I Gatterman, MA, DC

An adjustment corrects spinal subluxations to enhance nervous system function. Most people receiving a chiropractic adjustment will describe a sense of relaxation and a much looser and freeing feeling. As a rule, spinal adjustments are not painful. Some patients do report experiencing some discomfort following the first few adjustments. This apparent negative feeling usually subsides with a few adjustments and is simply attributed to the physiological changes of the body tissues.

Spinal correction takes time: weeks, months or years for some. Depending on the severity of the spinal distortion of vertebral subluxations, the chiropractic patient may respond after only one or a few spinal adjustments. No two people are the same, so even if two patients have the same spinal distortion, they will not heal in the same amount of time.

There are three stages to consider when determining how long it will take to heal:

  1. First is the initial intensive care stage. Visits are frequent, focusing on reducing symptoms.
  2. Second is the rehabilitative care stage. The objective is to stabilize spinal function for complete healing.
  3. Last is the maintenance care stage where regular check-ups prevent old and new spinal problems from occurring and reoccurring.
