The incidence of colic has been reported to be “between 8% and 49%”
in different studies with an average of 22.5%. The conditionis often described
as a “benign self-limiting condition that disappears spontaneously at
3 months of age” but in reality only “47% of cases are resolved
by 3 months and up to 12% remain until 12 months of age.” Theories of
the cause of infantile colic range from intestinal gas, birth delivery, drugs
during labour, etc. None of these have been proven. Treatments for colic have
also been varied from music to medication. Chiropractors have been
reporting success for resolution of colic for years.
Clinical studies have dramatically supported these findings.
A study in the Journal of Manipulative Therapy (Oct. 1999) used a randomised control design to compare chiropractic adjustments to a placebo drug for the treatment of colic. This study found the infants receiving spinal adjustments had their crying reduced by twice that of the control group. These results were similar to an earlier study showing colic reduced by an average of 66% as compared to only 37% in the drug group.
Does this mean that chiropractors treat colic?
No.
What chiropractors do is analyse, locate and correct subluxations in the nervous system.
Subluxations in the nervous system cause dysfunction in the tissues they supply. Many infants are born subluxated due to the birth process or intrauterine constraint. By correcting improper nerve flow the body is able to regulate and heal optimally.
In my own clinical experience I have seen infants with colic respond to chiropractic adjustments.
Many children are subluxated, which means they are developing with less then optimal nervous system control.
Most subluxations are asymptomatic meaning that we are unaware of the state and the status of our nervous systems.
People of all ages benefit from regular chiropractic care to keep their bodies healthy.
Adding chiropractic care to your family’s lifestyle helps give you a chance at greater health.
